Low tide this week is at 6.24pm, so it’ll be pretty well slack water.

The swim won’t be too long, as the annual Christmas barbecue will follow. Sausages, bread, sauce will be supplied free – bring any extras you fancy.

Bay of Islands Classic, December 16, 2018

Five intrepid Nelson swimmers made the journey to Paihia for the 3.3km swim, which this year went from Paihia to Russell, the first time it’s been held in this direction.

It was a fairly comfortable swim, with a little choppiness.

Andrew Martin placed 25th of the more than 500 finishers, taking the gold medal in his M55-59 age group, while Maggy Johnston survived a pre-race bee sting to take bronze in F60-64.

Dick Bennison was unlucky not to pick up a medal, finishing fourth in M60-64

Nelson results
