Port Nelson Swim Series, December 20, 2018
Conditions were great for a race that turned into a sprint for some. Although the surface was nice and calm, there was a serious current slowing things down in the first leg.
The long swim was about 650m, the short about 500m.

Ocean Swim Series, Race Two, The Gem, Omaha
Eight Nelson swimmers took on race two of the Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series last Saturday. The race started in the inlet, with a kilometre or so of calm flat swimming in clear water, but after popping out into the ocean things got pretty rough for the remainder of the 3.5km swim.
The medal count was two gold, two silver and two bronze, with Sierra Thomas the fourth woman overall to finish.
Here’s the results:
Sierra Thomas 2 F15-19 49.46
Andrew Martin 1 M55-59 51.44
Janis Crampton 1 F60-64 1.00.49
Stu Hebberd 2 M70-74 1.02.22
Dick Bennison 3 M65-69 1.02.36
Maggy Johnston 3 F60-64 1.06.20
Peter Gibbs 5 M70-74 1.13.15
Les Le Bas 10 M70-74 1.31.35
Port Nelson Swims – December 13
Conditions couldn’t have been better for what was probably the most pleasant swim this season. At the front of the long race, things were more competitive than ever, but that’ll all be clear from the results and photos.

Next week (December 20), we’ll hold our annual Christmas barbecue after the swim, with the compliments of Port Nelson. Allow yourself a bit of time to hang about after the swim – bring some extra food and a drink if you fancy. We’ve received three free entries to the The Interislander Big Tahuna on March 2. These will be announced at the barbecue, but you have to be there to claim them.
There’s no break in the Port Nelson series over Christmas – we swim every Thursday night.
Something to look forward to is the Eyebright Mile, race two of the Clements Endurance Series, on Sunday January 6 at 11am. As well as the 2km course from the yacht club to the beach, there’s a short option of 1400m from the Richardson St Steps.
We’ve received a discount code for the Big Tahuna. If you enter using the code SWIMNELSON10 you’ll get a 10% discount to the Nelson race. Many Nelson swimmers take part in these national Ocean Swim series with several going to Omaha Beach north of Auckland this weekend and more than 20 regularly taking part in the Capital Classic in Wellington – this season on January 27. Give it some thought.

Port Nelson Swims – December 6
Despite the miserable sky, the swim was wonderful. Calm seas and a moderate current made for some competitive swimming, with Luke Kelly turning the tables on Alec Swan at the front of the field in a nail-biting finish. The green boat that came and anchored during the race caused a few people to have problems with the finish – those are being sorted.
