The weather is looking good, without too much wind. The 3.8m high tide is at 3.13pm, so the current will be north to south.

Close to a dozen of our swimmers will be taking part in race one of the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series between Paihia and Russell on Sunday. We’ve now received a discount code for The Interislander Big Tahuna in Nelson on March 2. If you enter using the code SWIMNELSON10 you’ll get a 10% discount to the Nelson race. Many Nelson swimmers take part in these swims, with more than 20 regularly taking part in the Capital Classic in Wellington – this season on January 27. Give it some thought.

Race one of the Clements Endurance Series is on Sunday. The Opening Splash, 2km from the beach to the yacht club, or 600m from the Richardson St Steps to the yacht club. Everyone needs to sign up on the beach from 10.45am and be present at race briefing about 11.15. The race starts on the beach at 11.30am, with those doing the short course walking or driving to the steps to start approx at noon – on the high tide.

The forecast isn’t brilliant, but doesn’t look like it’ll be windy.

We owe a lot to our team of race officials, but it’s a very small team. Would you like to join our crew on registration and timing? From time to time we’re short in this area and Sunday is one of those days. If you can help out, please email us at info@nelsontriclub.co.nz. It’s a friendly team and a very rewarding task. We’d welcome you with open arms.

Some drama at the front of the field, as the leaders struggled to stick to the course. Read all about it in the story below.

Port Nelson Swims – opening night, Thursday November 8, 2018

Uh Oh

Things are rotten at the yacht club – wind, waves and generally nasty weather, so sadly, tonight’s swim is cancelled. Things are looking much more positive next week – see you then.

There are signs of increased activity in the water as swimmers get back into the swing of things. It’s still brisk, but slowly warming up.

If you’re planning to swim this week, be sure to allow plenty of time to find a carpark and get checked in by 6pm.

The tides are quite big at the moment. Low tide Thursday is just before 5pm, so will be flowing in by the time we start.

Courses will start with a leg heading south from the yacht club ramp, keeping as close to shore as possible given the state of the tide, then turn right out into the channel, returning with the flow to the ramp.

Swimmers should be aware that there will be sailing activity from the yacht club ramp on Thursday nights. We will keep our activities to one side of the ramp and swimmers are asked to restrict their warmup to the area north of the ramp.

Results, photos and story will be on this page as soon as possible on Thursday night.

The Interislander Big Tahuna

Fantastic results – five swimmers in the first ten, including overall winner Luke Kelly.

Sierra Thomas took out the second woman’s spot and we won a heap of medals
